I Have Severe Pressure At The Base Of My Skull

default
Posted on Sun, 16 Jun 2019
Question: I have severe pressure at the base of my skull with pain mostly on the right side.accompanied my swollen glands severe cold sore breakouts which make the pain in my neck/skull feel more “full” or “stiff” is the word I use. It hurts to turn my head in any direction, especially down and looking to either side is extremely painful. I have lots of nausea, Sometimes migraines, but not fever. My ears will itch horribly on the inside and out. I was diagnosed with Lupus last XXXXXXX and over the course of the past year have been able to tame my flare ups with diet and supplements. I’ve been waiting for my doctor to order an MRI because of my non stop neck/skull pain. Because of a change in physicians it’s been prolonged. Chiropractor gave little relief and physical therapy with skull manipulation gave the most relief, but was only temporary. It’s hindering my life and limits me from being healthier and going to the gym etc. any advice would be greatly appreciated as I’m still just seeing a GP and not getting the best referrals on anything.

Brief Answer:
The symptoms could be due to muscle tension headache.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. The most likely cause of your symptoms could be muscle tension headache, which can cause pain in the back of head and neck, limiting the free movements of the neck.

However, we should rule out sinusitis (sinus infection) by doing a CT scan of paranasal sinuses.

In view of your lupus, you also need MRI of brain to exclude CNS lupus (involvement of brain by lupus). If lupus affects brain, steroids or other immunosuppressive medicines may be needed.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
