Question: I am a 69 year old female. I have controlled Cirrhosis of the liver and Barrett's Esophagus. I do not drink alcohol. I take Zyfaxan (for ammonia levels) and Ursidiol.

I have just been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus. We are starting with a mild medicine and diet change. Could you advise me on foods and drinks that would be helpful?

Thank you, Chris Matthews

Please go through detailed answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,

A diabetic diet should consist of around 60% complex carbohydrates with 25% lean proteins and 10 to 15% good fats like PUFA and MUFA.
Some food plans are-
Whole grains are very beneficial to consume. They have a low glycemic index and converts slowly into sugar hence prevent insulin spike. These can be in the form of whole wheat bread or cereal, brown rice, whole grain pasta, grains such as whole oats, wild rice, rye, oatmeal and corn. You can choose what ever fits in your food pattern.
-Fruits and vegetables should be a significant part of any diet.. They are full of essential nutrients and are easy to digest.Take low glycemic index fruits like pear ,apple, kiwi etc.
-Healthy proteins in the form of low-fat milk and dairy products along with lean meats, beans, eggs and soy products can also be a part of a healthy liver as well as diabetic diet.
-Avoid red meat.
Try to switch over to veg diet.
Take anti oxidants daily.
-Silibinin, also known as silybin, is the major active constituent of silymarin, a standardized extract of the milk thistle seeds, containing a mixture of flavonolignans consisting of silibinin, isosilibinin. It should be taken two times a day.Its a very potent liver rejenuvator and is very effective in maintaining liver healthy.
Take fenugreek seed powder twice daily wh significantly lower blood sugar levels.
Hope i was helpful.
Regards!

You were very helpful. just a couple more questions:

Any suggestions on what specific soy products? Soy hot dogs?

Any suggestions on what specific anti-oxidants?

I trust I can get silibinin and fenugreek seed powder at health food stores?
