Brief Answer:
Possible congestion or allergy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I think the popping in ear that you are experiencing is caused by the inflammation of the mucosal lining of the Eustachian tube.
The inflammation may be caused by cold, allergies, flu or even ear infection.
The Eustachian tube is congested, and the movement of the fluid causes the cracking sounds.
You can use antihistamines such benadryl or citerizine for congestion also can use decongestants such pseudoephedrine.
Also corticosteroids can be used to treat allergy as well as congestion and popping ear.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
