Question: I have had gastritis for several yrs taking nexium 40 mgs once a day which always helped. Been under tremendous stress and not eating right so it’s been bothering me seems like nexium isn’t helping anymore I do drink 2-3 bottles of carbonated waters a day immediately after I get a bubbly stomach and some gas which I never had before really no other symptoms

Hello my Dear Patient and Thanks for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query,
Have seen your Details,
Carbonated water is making Gastritis worse.
Carbondioxide mixed with water forms an acidic solution and thereby worsens gastritis.
Stop consuming it immediately and Nexium would start working again.
Secondly Nexium 40mg has to be taken in twice daily doses.So 40mg once a day is suboptimal dose.

For Gassy stomach initially stop consuming Carbonated water/Sparkling water.Make Nexium 40mg twice daily.If problem is still there add Activated charcoal tablet(Over the counter)-2tablets as and when required.
Follow up after 3 days.
