Brief Answer:
Inflammation along intestines.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query.
Have seen your details.
Gas is formed as a result of incomplete fermentation of food inside intestines usually by bad bacteria's and yeasts. This gas produced compresses the intestines and the colonies of bad bacteria and fungi causes it to inflamme.
This inflammation causes irritation of nerves running inside the intestines hence giving false sensation to poop again and again.Even in some cases evacuation is incomplete.
Rx
Take a probiotic (good bacteria) like VSL#3 thrice daily.
Take Activated charcoal tablet 2 tablet thrice daily to absorb gas formed.
Tab Ibugesic 400 mg twice daily to subside inflammation along the intestine. All are over counter.
If you can manage get a percription for Rifaximin 550 mg twice daily to kill the bad bacterias from your G.P by explaining him what i have written down.
Along with it take lots of pre and probiotic rich food and fibers like Pear apple curd yogurt etc.
Avoid meat.
Eat home cooked vegetarian food for few days.Preferably BRAT diet.Banana,Apple sauce rice and toast.
You would feel much better in a week.
Follow up after a week.
Hope my explaination was easy to understand and helpful.
Thanks and feel free to follow up.

Brief Answer:
Almost 40% of patients are labeled as IBS

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Ibugesic is Ibuprofen combined with Acetaminophen.

IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion as there is no test to confirm you have IBS. It means that when you have nothing or all your investigations are normal you are labeled as having IBS.

IBS is a common disorder affecting the large intestine. Abdominal pain, bloating, gas or diarrhea may be some of the signs and symptoms of IBS. Foods, stress and other diseases can trigger the problem.

However, the exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome is not yet known but studies suggest that a lot of factors play a major role.

So unless your stool test colonoscopy and fecal calprotectin tests are normal no one can label you as having IBS.

Do consult your Gastro and get these tests done. If normal, try probiotics and anti-gas agents with proper lifestyle modification. If still not relieved then you could be having IBS.

IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion unless all tests turn up to be normal.

Hope this clears your doubt.

Thank you and feel free to follow up.

I did all that 3years ago . Have been having nothing but problems, Drs. tell me different things metamucil, stool softeners. Nothing helps. What kind of foods do I need to eat? Also have bad hemeroids. Can that make you feel like you have to poop? Sometimes I poop all day and sometimes only once or twice, then feel constipated (bloated and gassy) inbetween. Lots of stomach aches all day every day. IBS medicines I've had, all gave me diareaha. So I haven't been on any medicine for long at all. I don't know what to eat ,because no matter what, I wake uo at 3-4 am. feeling like I need to go, . and I can't. Have oat meal take my pills. Then try to go back to sleep till 5-6am. spend the rest of the day in and out of the bathrom. I am miserable. Would the brat diet, probiotics, etc. work for irritable bowel?

In that case, need a few more details.

Hello my dear,

Before answering this query in detail, I need to know whether any tests like Colonoscopy, Fecal Calprotectin, any stool culture test, etc had been done by your doctor. If yes, please share the results.

Were you given prescriptions for medicines meant to control symptoms of IBS like Dicyclomine etc?

Were you prescribed probiotic? If yes, duration?
Were you given Rifaximin?

Awaiting...

Yes. I've had all the tests done, and everything comes back normal. My dr. is giving me Rifaximine samples Mon. morning. thank you. it's the only one I haven't tried. I've tried Align and Phillips colon health before also. Should I eat or not eat certain foods? I'm always nervous about food.

Brief Answer:
Try simple vegetarian food for 21 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again dear,
As said earlier every case of IBS is a new case and so managing symptoms are usually a bit difficult.
Food allergies are very commonly associated with IBS.
Though there is no specific diet schedule which fits every patient. However usually its the patient itself who finds out what and which type of food keeps symptoms in control.
But as a rule of thumb the lighter the food would be the more comfortable it would be for your intestines to digest it without getting irritated.
I would suggest you to try vegetarian diet for few weeks and see the results. All green vegetable can be taken along with rice or bread(whatever suits your food pattern). Avoid heavy proteins for few week and take very low fat.
Carbohydrates especially veggies are usually very easy for your stomach to digest and usually patient responds to it.
Secondly take 10 gram of psyllium husk a bulk forming natural fiber thrice daily with 200ml XXXXXXX warm water.
Avoid all junk fatty and processed food for 3 weeks.
Take yoghurt twice a day.
Tell me how you respond to it after 21 days.
Hope I was helpful.
