Question: I have calcific tendinitis in my shoulder which started on Sunday. By Monday, I was in excruciating pain and went to an orthopedic urgent care where I got my diagnosis and received a cortisone shot. Had routine blood work done yesterday and my wbc are high….wbc, neutrophils are high and low eosinophils. Could this be from the injection?

Brief Answer:
Injection can be the reason

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

The increased wbc and neutrophils count you had was a result of the injection you had on Monday. Your wbc and neutrophils can be elevated for two more weeks so better do the blood count after 2-3 weeks
Hope I have answered the question.

So this is a common thing? I called the place that injected me and they had never heard of it happening before. They are PA’s and sound young so I don’t know. I have frequent labs and just had them run last week and my white blood cells were all normal. The injection is the only thing that changed between last week’s blood work and this weeks. I have labs again on Monday for a procedure on Tuesday and I’m hoping they’re not even more increased. This is causing anxiety

Brief Answer:
It is common.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. It is very common and may happen almost to everyone.
I believe that on Monday they will not be more increased but they may be lower.

If there are no other signs of infection, then it is just a side effect of cortisone and is well known to occur.
