I Have Been Having Difficulty Swallowing For Over A Year,

default
Posted on Sun, 30 Sep 2018
Question: I have been having difficulty swallowing for over a year, audible swallow, sore throat, wet vocal quality, and globus also for over a year. I have recently noticed a weakness in my voice and difficulty projecting my voice. I have seen an ENT who diagnosed me with GERD. I took the medication he prescribed with no improvement.

In addition, I have recently noticed intermittent hearing loss and neck tightness/pain. These symptoms are all on the left side, as are the above mentioned symptoms.

I feel I am having some word-finding problems as well and some episodes of increased emotion for no reason.

If you can provide any suggestions as to possible etiology, I would appreciate your help.

I am a 34 year DPT and work in the health care profession.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Brief Answer:
Probably symptoms related to GERD,anxiety can trigger the symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms seem to be related to GERD.
Reflux can cause chronic laryngitis which can lead to voice change, voice loss, and pain that can be spread in the neck.

Anxiety can also trigger the symptoms.I suggest you not to be worried because it is a condition that can be treated with medications.

I see that you had already taken medication to treat GERD with no improvement. In this case I suggest a visit to a gastrologist for an alternative medication.

Meanwhile, some advice that I can give to you are:
-use antacids to low stomach acidity
-use acetaminophen for the neck pain, avoid non inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen
-avoid food that can trigger the symptoms, also avoid caffeine and alcohol
-use chamomile tea for relief

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
