Suggest Treatment For Bump On Knee Cap

Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: I have a red bump on my knee cap. I went to my doc who is a physicians assistant. she siad it was an abscess and gave me clindamyicin for two weeks. I also did the warm compress treatment several times a day. I went back and she wanted to XXXXXXX it. she gave me at least 7 shots of lidocaine and I could still feel everything. so I changed my mind about the lancing. Now three weeks later it has shrunk down to half the size it was. It does not hurt, actually never did. I can walk normally but would like to get second opinion. what kind of doctor should I go to. One recommend is orthopedic specialist. I am healthy otherwise never had anything like this before.

the doc asked me if I had cut myself on my knee or hurt my knee. answer was no.
But i had visited my father in law and he had had mrsa a few months ago while getting chemo therapy. He lives in another state.

Brief Answer:
An orthopedic surgeon is the best choice.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to healthcaremagic.com and thank you for posting your query.

From your description, the swelling does not sound like an abscess, abscesses invariably cause severe pain.

I would like to know the duration of this red bump, when did you notice it and did it increase in size after that, before it reduced in size?

Since it is around the knee, the best doctor to consult would be an orthopedic surgeon, but if the swelling is just in the skin, then probably a surgeon or a skin specialist would be better.

Hope that answers your query, please upload a photo of the swelling and answer the questions so that I can help you better.

Wishing you good health.

Warm regards

the bump started out small and then increased in size to about 2 1/2 inches wide. After the antibotics and compresses it did shrink and looked better. Even without the antibotics I continued the warm compresses and now it is about a little over an inch wide. I have this about a month now.

Brief Answer:
Doesn't sound like an abscess.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for writing back with details. I apologize for the delay in responding to you.

As I said earlier, I find it hard to believe that the swelling/lump is due to infection/abscess.

It would have been extremely painful and you would have developed fever if it was due to infection.

In my opinion, you will benefit from visiting an orthopedic surgeon as I suspect the swelling has something to do with your knee joint.

The duration of one month also goes against the possibility of abscess.

I hope this information will be of use to you, please feel free to write back to me if you need any more clarifications.

Wishing you good health.

Warm regards
