Is CRP Level Of 87.96 A Cause For Concern?

Question: I have a really swollen and sore abdomen and a CRP level of 87.96 in my blood results today... what does that mean as it seems very high. All other bloods were fine and an abdomen ultrasound appeared to be fine by radiologist.

CRP is c- reactive protien its the marker of inflammation which signifies that there is inflammation going on in the body now its also said that it is not just a marker but also causes inflammation. Its produced thorough out the body specially immune cells , liver , adipocytes. Even if you dont have any symptoms increase CRP levels indicate increase risk for all degenerative conditions like diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease. Fat people usually have increased values, optimal crp values are 0.55 mg/dl in men 0.1 mg/dl in women.
People with increased levels are 45% increased risk for coronary artery disease
It has been used as risk assesment in many chronic inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
It begin to rise in 6-12 hrs and peak at 48-96 hrs after an inflammatory insults.
Its non specific as it doesn't tell where is the inflammation other tests are required for that .
Regarding abdomen u/s abdomen, ct abdomen, colonoscopy can be done to rule out many pathologies
Sore swollen abdomen can be due to other reasons like problems in liver, kidney and heart. Blood test like renal function test , liver function test , can be done.

Could the levels also be raised due to an infection and then go back down once infection or inflammation has gone?

Yes, as explained previously , it is a marker of inflammation. That inflammation can be associated with infection. It would subside with resolution of the infection and associated inflammation
