Question: I have a hx of hemorrhoids. I bled once recently without having a bowl movement. I’m 45 and had a colonoscopy on Monday. I had 5 polyps ranging from 5mm to one that was 14mm in size. The doctor told me they are sessile, were entirely removed and their appearance os benign. The results will take a week and I’m nervous.

I am 45 years old. I have a hx of hemorrhoids. On 11/5/20 I had severe itching. I noticed a little blood on the tissue. It was the first and only time that has ever happened. I also have a history of constipation. On 11/9 I went to a gastroenterologist and since my mother had polyps in her 50’s she recommended a colonoscopy. I had a colonoscopy on 11/16 and am awaiting the results. 5 polyps were removed ranging from 5mm to the largest polyp removed was 14mm. The doctor gave me a discharge paper which I am attaching which stated the polyps were sessile and benign in appearance. She spoke to my after the colonoscopy and stated that she believes they are not cancerous but I’m worried as the results from pathology will take at least a week.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question. Hope I can be of help for you today. Colon polyps are tiny growths that form on the inside of the large intestine and polyps are very common and mostly are benign. If your mom had benign polyps your risk of cancer is also low. Roughly one-third to one -half of all adults have them by the time they are 50 years old. From colonoscopy you can see the appearance of the polyps and remove them. High Specificity test to know that cancer or benign should be from pathology. But your technician can suspect that benign or cancer by seeing them also depend on the experience and the characteristic of the benign cell. You might need to have a colonoscopy every few years to check for more polyps. In some people polyps come back. To reduce your chances of getting polyps or colon cancer you should eat a diet that is low in fat and high in fruits, vegetables, and fiber. You should lose weight if you are overweight, do not smoke, limit the amount of alcohol you drink and drink a lot of water.

I hope that It can help you, and please let me know if you have any clarification or question about that, and I would be welcome to discuss it with you further. I Hope you have good health.

Hello,
Thank you again for your question. Sessile polyps meant that polyps tend to grow as slightly flattened, broad based polyps. This kind of polyps is benign but it can develop to cancer. It's good to remove and follow the colonoscope.
