Question: I have a history of Shingles and have been inoculated. But having been completely isolating during Coronavirus, and not exposed to anyone, I have a large cold sore on my outside lower lip. I’m told these can be related to shingles family- what is the best treatment?

Brief Answer:
Regarding herpes simplex virus

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

Cold sore is caused Herpes Simplex Type 1 (HSV) which though belonging to herpes virus family just like Varicella zoster virus, is a different one. However treatment for both of these viruses is with oral antivirals like valacyclovir or acyclovir. You can take valacyclovir 1gm, 2 tablets 2times (12 hrs apart) for a day. Topically you may use an antibiotic ointment e.g either neosporin ointment or mupirocin ointment, twice daily for a few days.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.
