I Have A Dry Mouth And That’s Concerning To Me

Question: I have a dry mouth and that’s concerning to me too plus excess saliva. I think that could be due to my cold. I am suffering from a mild bout of cold for the last 3 weeks, which does not want to go away

The phlegm sticking to my throat is just not going away. I have tried everything, nasal decongestant, mucus thinner , hot water and steam. I don’t have any nasal congestion nothing which sounds could be the reason. The area around my throat feels tight due to this. When I try to swallow it I just feel the mucus feeling, when I try to spit out little white mucus comes out.

I am really worried about this, should I go see an ENT doctor for the same?

s the feeling of something stuck in your throat can be evaluated by ENT?

Can a swallow study rule out anything to do with my feeling of swallowing? Again it’s just one or morsels feel like sticking, could this be due to anxiety?

How long should I wait before I see an ent for the same?

When someone says difficulty swallowing does it mean hard to push it down or like one or 2 morsels stick to your tongue but go down when you drink water?

Brief Answer:
Few more details are required.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query,
Have seen your details,
Anxiety stimulates the autonomous nervous system which may cause increased salivation. However a feeling of something stuck in throat can also be due to Gastroesophageal reflux problem also.
I need few more details for providing a professional advice-
Do you ever feel acidity or gas problem?
Do you ever have heartburn?
Are you smoker or alcoholic?

As per your query,
Yes a Barium swallow would be a good test for you to look for any obstruction however test of choice is Esophageo-Laryngoscopy(In which a tube with camera is swallowed and would give images from gastro-esophageal tract directly).
For further answer I need further details.
Waiting,
Thank you!

Before this sticking in throat thing, I had a bad bout of gerd with constantly burping for one entire day. I do have gerd ibs and off lately a very bad case of anxiety.

I don’t have heartburn but I burp a lot.

I don’t smoke or drink.

During dinner I was able to swallow but during the last couple of bites I felt something was sticking and now I still have a feeling that a small piece is stuck on to my throat.

One question,
Will a barium swallow rule out dysphagia or off lately I have an anxiety of having muscle weakness in my throat.

So should I wait for a week to see what happens or just go and get a referral to a gastro or ent doctor?

Thank you for follow up,
When acid regurgitates back into your mouth it irritates the thin layer of cells lining your esophagus and mouth(called mucosa).Repeated injury to mucosa leads to secretion of increased amount of mucous leading to excessive salivation.
Injured mucosa may get inflammed hence causing it difficult for the food to pass.
Anxiety may increase or cause GERD symptoms to increase.

Test of choice for you would be an endoscopy.
Barium swallow is ok but won't rule out the cause of GERD.
I would suggest you to meet Gastroenterologist and get na endoscopy done followed by proper management of GERD.
I don't think that waiting would be helpful.
Thank you.

I did have an endoscopy last year in May. All well at that time.

So do you think this could be due to muscle weakness of the throat, I am not sure why I am thinking like that.

Is this common for someone my age, I am just 29. I have had a very bad year with gerd last year. I would have easily burped for 5-6 months straight. Had lot of days with irritated throat and globus.

Is this dangerous if I wait and see?
Will an ent be any helpful to me?

Barium swallow is useful to see if my muscles are working well right?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Is this common for someone my age, I am just 29-No not at all common.Muscle weakness is rare case .Esophagus in connected to gut lined by elastic band. Laxicity may cause acid to reflux back into esophagus.
Is this dangerous if I wait and see?-Whats the use without proper medicines sir.Things would remain unchanged.
Will an ent be any helpful to me?-No gastroenterologist.
As you are so fascinated with barium swallow you could go for it.Remenber it was a good test but far better tests are available. If there had been a blockage or loose sphincter it would have been reflected in endoscopy.
Barium swallow is useful to see if my muscles are working well right?-Endoscopy is far superior. No use of comparing a short gun with klashnikov.

Acid refluxing back irritate the mucosa of esophagus throat causing inflammation allergy and hence cousing cough.
Hope i was clear,
Starty taking over the counter omeprazole 40mg twice daily along with domperidon 10mg thrice.
Hope you are satisfied by answer,

Thank you!

The reason I am saying barium swallow is I had a very bad health anxiety scare for ALS and I read a swallow study would rule out any thing bad in terms of that disease.

I am coughing a lot and have a feeling of a pill stuck in my throat. Yesterday I woke due to little shortness of breath but after passing gas in the form of burps it went away. The shortness of breath was very mild and probably in the middle of the chest upper part of the esophagus.

Also I am able to swallow everything but now have a feeling my throat is swollen due to the constant coughing for the last 3-4 days, I am very scared. My cough is all dry cough with little to no phlegm.

Also, should I look out for some foods until I see a gastroenterologist? Any medicine for my cough and throat? Any home remedies until then?

Dr I have a pistachio stuck i. My throat, I tried to push it down using my finger, eating more food and water it’s not going down.

Is this sign of dysphagia? I am really worried that this could be due to ALS.

Can endoscopy and other tests rule out dysphagia?

What to do for chocking?

Hello and thanks for follow up,
Dysphagia means inability to swallow due to weakness of muscles.
Yes endoscopy would rule out this condition.
First go for the test once done cause would be rules out.
No use of making wild guesses.
Thank you.
