Question: I have a cold sore and let my 2 year old take a bite of ice cream from my spoon. I’m freaking out that she’ll get one now.

Transmission is more likely if the lesions are open but unfortunately, it can still occur otherwise though the chance is lower.

The incubation period (time it takes between contact and symptoms occurring) is 2 to 12 days though most may show symptoms by day 3 to 6.

There are medications , both oral and topical that are used to treat cold sores if they occur but it would be best to monitor her up to approximately 2 weeks because she may not have any symptoms at all.
Unfortunately if the virus was transmitted, there are no current meds to stop the transmission from continuing
