Question: I have a black black eye and I can’t open it. I’ve used ice but it is still swollen shut. How long will it be like this? Is there any way to help beside ice?

Hi...
Welcome to the 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I am Dr. Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query/image and here is my opinion.

As per the image, it should take the next 1 to 2 weeks for your eyes completely.

Application of ice (wrapped in cloth and not directly) for 15 minutes, multiple times in a day is the mainstay of treatment.

After a week, when swelling disappears and the only discoloration is left, You can start warm compress.

Take Over the counter NSAID like Ibuprofen for pain relief and to reduce inflammation.
Loading doses of Vitamin C (500 mg twice a day) is said to help because it prevents capillary leak.

Avoid pressure over the area.
Keep head end elevated while sleeping.
Do a gentle massage with Aloe Vera gel and/or Arnica.
Be careful while applying Arnica because it should not go in eyes.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards

When will my eye open? Can I use a black patch over it for work meeting? It has been shut since yesterday after I fell. The color is turning dark also it hurts to blow my nose.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

It would open as soon as the swelling and inflammation decreases.
It might take next 3 to 4 days.

If you want, you can use a black patch over it but avoid any pressure.
You can wear dark glasses to hide it instead of a patch.

A bruise always changes color as it heals.
It is quite normal.
Hemoglobin in blood is an iron rich compound and with time, it break down into other compounds thus making the bruise change colors.
It's usually red just after the injury,in a couple of days turns purplish or black and blue thereafter.

You can take NSAIDs like Paracetamol 500 mg thrice a day for pain relief.

Happy living.
Regards.
