I Have NPH And Will Be Getting A New Shunt

default
Posted on Sat, 9 Feb 2019
Question:
I have NPH and will be getting a new shunt put in on the 25th. The former one was removed over a month ago due to a staph infection. In the meantime, my urine has a VERY strong odor, almost foul. I don't believe I have a bladder infection. (No symptoms of burning or itching) Just the usual NPH symptoms of mild incontinence.

Brief Answer:
Urinary track infection is possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

Nph usually gives symptoms of incontinence and this is the main cause of it.
Meanwhile foul odour may be a sign of infection and since nerve sensitivity may be damaged by Nph you may not feel itching or burning.
You may need to do a urine analysis and if it is positive for infection an uroculture is needed to determine the kind of antibiotics which may be used.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
