Question: I had a knee operation on 12/03/18. My surgeon has told me that my knee is "stuck" and he can force the knee ( knee numbed) to "break it loose." He likens it the velcrose that needs to be separated. He gave me the option of trying to force the knee, heel to buttock, myself. I have tried and extremely painful. Is this a common practice? If I allow him to break it loose what are the variables with my knee i.e. Average recovery and possible damage? I have spoken with a friend who is a doctor and he has never heard of this procedure. What's your take?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The restricted movements of the knee joint can happen due to contracture caused by a scar tissue. By Manipulation Under Anaesthhesia the adhesions can be removed and the range of movement of the joint increases. It helps in decreasing the painful movements and usually recovery is seen in 2- 4weeks. It can cause some soft tissue damage that usually heals on its own. The success of the procedure depends on the extent of adhesions present inside the joint. There is no harm in trying the procedure as it can improve your quality of life.
I hope this answers your query.

Doctor, What are the issues I would confront if the soft tissue DOESN'T heal? How would the unheralded soft tissue effect my ability to actively pursue golf, hiking, mountain Biking, swimming etc. over the top next six years. Finally have the money and time to travel and do those things. Thank-you, John

Doctor, Can the adhesions be identified in their severity via an xray?

Brief Answer:
Cannot be detected on X-ray.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If the soft tissue doesn't heal there can be a persistent pain in the knee joint. It can cause a further damage to the already paining knee. In case you do not go with the procedure your range of movement will remain restricted and you will not be able to enjoy all these activities either.
These adhesions cannot be detected on X-ray or MRI scan.
Hope my answer is helpful.
