Brief Answer:
It could be a benign or malignant cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing 'Ask a Doctor' service for your query,
It could be esophageal cancer. Please don't panic.Cancers or mass can be of two types benign(normal in 90% cases)and Malignant in 10% cases.Even if on biopsy it turns out to be malignant there are various stages and early detected adenocarcinomas can be treated very well.A mass usually describes cells that line the esophagus change or mutate and become malignant. These cells grow out of control and form a mass or tumor.
Initially a endoscopy would be done.Small part of tissue would be taken an studied in pathology.Only after that one could say if it's benign(normal) or malignant.

Don't panic.
Go for Endoscopy and biopsy.
Follow up with reports.
Hope I was helpful.
