I (female) Had Unprotected Oral Sex With My Ex(male) For

Question: I (female) had unprotected oral sex with my ex(male) for a year (me on him and him on me) and some protected intercourses. He had more than 10 sex partners before and one of them had a lot more sex partners. He tested negative for HIV, HSV2, hepatitis, and etc before we had sex. He had an ex who had HSV2. I had HPV vaccination years before starting to have sex. What is the chance that he still has HSV2? What risks do I face now in terms of HPV infection (including oral HPV or oral cancer), HSV2, and other diseases? What steps do I need to take to ensure my health? Thank you! I got tested for STDs and am waiting for results and plan to get a cervical cancer screening.

Brief Answer:
Regarding STDs

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

Protected intercourse though much safer is still not 100% protective against HSV 2 and HPV transmission. However, protected sex is safe as far as the risk of HIV and Hepatitis is concerned.

If his HSV 2 report was negative (provided it was done after a sufficient time had elapsed from his last risky sexual exposure i.e 12-16 weeks) then that excludes the possibility of him having HSV 2. The same holds true for HIV and Hepatitis B.

HPV vaccines are protective against carcinogenic HPV Types like 16,18, 31, 33. Most genital HPV infections are caused by non-carcinogenic HPV types - 6 and 11. So even though you may have oral HPV with the noncarcinogenic HPV you are unlikely to get HPV-related oro- pharyngeal pathologies.

Ideally, you need to undergo a full screen for all STDs (which I think you already have) since all forms of unprotected sex- oral, vaginal, or anal, are unsafe.

Hope I have answered your query.

Thank you! Would HPV 6 and 11 and oral HPV produce any symptoms like genital warts ? Do the viruses clear out eventually? Does it take years for any HPV infection (carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic) to show up in tests? How effective is the vaccination in preventing carcinogenic infections? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Regarding HPV

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Apology for delayed response.
Type 6 and 11 infection may cause visible warts commonly in genital region but also on oral mucosa.
It is a normal for our bodies to eventually clear the virus infection by 22-24 months of infection aided by surgical removal of any visible warts, if any.
HPV infection is mostly silent therefore most people are unaware of the infection. However, nucleic acid tests (tests which detect genetic material of viruses) can help detect asymptomatic infection and also determine HPV types. However they are not routinely performed.
The vaccine against carcinogenic strains is considered to be 100% effective in preventing cancer.
Take care
