Question: I bought an eliptical machine to exercise but when I use it above my knee caps burn right away. Is there anything I can do about that. I really like the way it feels on the rest of my body but this makes it impossible to use and I don't know why that happens?

Brief Answer:
For how long have you had it?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I am happy to know you are taking care of your health by exercising often. I will like to know for how long you have been using it. Often, beginners have such difficulties because the muscles are not adapted. With continued exercise, this generally gets better. My plan would be that you continue to exercise starting with shorter durations and intensity and increasing progressively until you reach the target.

If this doesn't help, let me know and I may suggest you get the knees examined just to make sure we are not missing out on anything.

Until next, I wish you well.

Thank you. I just started with this machine... I have not exercised in a long time. I have had this problem in the past when I was exercising regularly. Do you know what might cause this burning sensation? This literally happens as soon as I start. This includes any exercises involving my knees.

Brief Answer:
You need to go slowly!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You need to start at a low level and increase progressively. The pain results from muscle stretch beyond the usual limit. If you were to start low and increase progressively, this would no longer be an issue. While we can give pain medications to cut off this sensation, I do not think it is ideal.

I hope this guides and helps. I wish you well.
