I Am Writing For Any Suggestion(s). I’m 71 Years Old,

Question: I am writing for any suggestion(s). I’m 71 years old, in very good shape and very active. In the last three weeks I have been urinating frequently, especially in the evening (daytime 5 to 6 times; evening - nocturia - lately every 1 to 2 hours). My urine is straw coloured and I feel normal otherwise, and exercise as usual. I mentioned it to my GP and she did not seem too concerned although she did say that the urine contained some white blood cells. She requisitioned a complete blood work up, including a PSA test (see results uploaded), and since she did not call me back I assume that everything is ok. She also suggested that I book an appointment for an Ultrasound to assess the pelvis, prostate and post-void residual. I have to drink 32 oz of water 1 hour prior to the appointment and have a full bladder. There’s the rub; I don’t think that I can contain a full bladder for that length of time. I did inform my concern to the booking agent and she said that the test can only be done with a full bladder and that I should speak to my GP about any other test(s) that could be done. GP unavailable at this time.

Any suggestion(s) would be greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
It sounds like BPH

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

From your history and blood tests it sounds like you either have a bladder infection and/or benign prostate hyperplasia. It is harmless but of course impacts negatively on your quality of life. I recommend you drink the amount suggested by the doctor, and if it turns out you cannot contain the urine, simply void your bladder partially to an extent where you can still tolerate it.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

No disrespect intended but I asked for an opinion from a Urologist and not a general surgeon unless you specialize in Urology I apologize. Is it normal to lose weight but still have your normal strength and endurance?

Brief Answer:
Weight, strength and endurance not linked 1:1

Detailed Answer:
Dear Jackandlynn,

The issue you describe fits well within the boundaries of general surgery. Weight loss does not necessarily lead to loss of endurance or strength, it all depends on the cause of the weight loss (exercise versus disease) and your starting point (underweight, normal weight, overweight). Have you unintentionally lost weight?

Best wishes,
Anders.

Yes, I have unintentionally loss weight. My weight today was 129lb; I was 135lbs several weeks ago. I thought maybe the frequency of urination had something to do with this lost of weight. What hospital are you affiliated with? Just curious. Do you think cranberry juice could clear up a potential infection?

Thank you and cheers.

Brief Answer:
Craneberry juice is harmless (but doesn't work)

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

The weight loss you mention is very moderate and likely caused by dehydration from urination or possibly just random variation.
I would suggest a urinalysis before considering treating a urinary tract infection. Cranberry juice specifically does not work for that, just make sure you drink lots of fluid (water, lemonade, etc.).
I am affiliated with Odense University Hospital.

Best wishes,
Anders.
