Brief Answer:
Surgery may not be required.

Detailed Answer:
Hi , I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
You are suffering from herniated disc and and have pain in the legs- which is the commonest symptom in case of slipped disc.
In my opinion and my clinical practice- my treatment is conservative (non operative) to begin with and 95% of patients get well without surgery. Only few cases of persistent pain after adequate treatment or the ones involving bladder symptoms need surgery .
I start my patients on pain killers ,muscle relaxants , physiotherapy, and precautions( like no forward bending, No weight lifting, avoid prolonged sitting) for adequate time , depending on clinical evaluation.

Thanks for the question. I hope to have answered your question. Please feel free to ask any other question.
