Question: I am a 27 year old female. I have developed an action tremor in my thumb over the past 72 hours. The day after it started, it became sore almost feels like a bruise under my thumb. The tremor is really concerning me as I read it could be a symptom of ALS. What could this possibly be? It is a very fast tremor with very small movement at the base of my thumb. It continues until I move my thumb out of the position it is in.

Brief Answer:
No reason to worry about ALS.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to “Ask a Doctor “ service.

I have read your question.

Tremor in only one thumb does not mean that you should be afraid of ALS.

There is pain too which is an uncommon feature of ALS.

This type of tremor is more likely of physiological origin.

So, I don’t see a reason to be worried about ALS in your case.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Okay thanks for the reply. At what point should I start to be concerned? Could trauma have caused the tremor and bruised feeling? Thanks so much.

I would explain as follows.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

ALS is a condition characterized by symptoms such as muscles weakness, impaired coordination, speech, swallowing, fasciculations, spasticity, etc. so, it is not justifiable to think about it in your case.

Trauma if has damaged any nerve may be the culprit.

Hope this helps.

Take care.

Thank you so much for your reply. I guess the reason I am concerned is because I thought the action tremor is considered a fasciculation?
