Cracked rib usually causes sharp pain when moving the chest (when breathing). Such pain can disappear when not moving the chest. You may also palpate a painful rib and if lucky it may crunch when pressing on it.
The best way to confirm cracked rib is an X-ray. Broken ribs usually do not need any special treatment and get healed by their own.
