How To Keep Liver Healty?

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Nov 2014
Question: I am 31 and have been drinking hard since I was 18. I have never had any health related issues from alcohol, though i would likely ignore any minor issues. I have seen several doctors over the years any had blood work done at least every two years and my doctors have always given me a clean XXXXXXX of health.

I am likely needlessly worrying, but I have attached my latest blood work and would like to know if fatty liver, alcoholic Hep, and cerrosis can be ruled out based on my lab results.

I have of course cut back on drinking and am currently abstaining from alcohol.

Brief Answer:
Alcohol effects low

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your medical questions and concerns. I want to congratulate you on stopping alcohol. That is a tremendous accomplishment.

By stopping alcohol you maybe able to change the low testosterone and the low vitamin D levels. Alcohol will increase the production of female hormones and hence cause the low testosterone levels. Just by stopping you will be able to improve you levels. I recommend that you repeat your testosterone level fasting in 3 months. Also repeat the Vitamin D levels as this may also be artificially decreased also due to the alcohol.

Your other lab works are all normal but because you have been drinking regularly for years your body can compensate for the effects for several years. But this is cumulative and there will be a time when the liver will no longer be able to repair itself and then progress to cirrhosis. Unfortunately I have had young alcoholics develop cirrhosis at young ages and die. Once cirrhosis manifests with abnormal liver enzymes and other lab problems including anemia and edema it is too late.

Again I commend you on taking control of your life and stopping your alcohol.
