How To Deal With Dementia?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Sep 2023
Question: I own a bookstore and was approached by a woman in her 60s who said she was suffering from a degenerative condition that began with a loss of short term memory and then will descend into dementia. Trying to prepare herself for this frightening time of life she is looking for tools to help her deal with her memory loss, such as a children's dictionary with pictures of things and their name. She wonders if there are adult tools out there to help.

Brief Answer:
Onset of dementia can be slowed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

A lot of individuals after 60 develop issues in cognition, memory and judgement. In some individuals who have Alzheimer’s dementia such symptoms result in impairment in functioning which develops gradually.

This is the reasons it’s advised for elderly to keep their brain active. Keeping home address and phone number written in pocket is first step. A small diary should be kept in pocket which should be used to write down the day to day schedule. This helps a lot in functioning and once this becomes habit this helps to maintain the confidence.

Apart from this we advise individuals to play brain stimulation games. Sudoku or crossword books are advised for them. Both helps to delay the onset of dementia. Books with reasoning and abstract questions also help a lot in functioning.

You can suggest such books to your client.

I hope this helps but if you still have more to ask please ask again.

Thanks
