How Should Tail Bone Soreness That Got Alleviated After A Hysterectomy?

default
Posted on Mon, 25 Jul 2022
Question: I have had tailbone soreness, like a dull ache when sitting for a couple of years. It started after baseball tournaments when we would spend the whole weekend sitting on bleachers. Sometimes it goes away but if I sit for long periods it gets sore again. I work with children and spend a lot of time sitting on the floor with kids in my lap. I am overweight and have recently lost 30lbs through diet and exercise. 8 months ago I had a hysterectomy and the pain totally went away after that but now it’s back again. My question is could this be something serious like a tumor or is it most likely something benign? My doctor doesn’t seem concerned just told me to sit on a coccyx cushion which does help. The only time it bothers me is when I sit directly on my tailbone or sit for too long. Thanks!!

Brief Answer:
Seems not a serious condition.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Since there is 2 years history of tailbone pain, a serious condition such a tumor, for example, is very unlikely.

Since the coccyx cushion is helping, the problem seems to be mechanical (from direct compression on hard surfaces).

I think you should have an x-ray of your tailbone done to evaluate any past fracture especially if you fell on your bottoms in the past.

If the pain the pain worsens, local nerve blocks (injections) may help for long-term relief.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

One other question...the ache almost feels more muscular, if it’s sore my husband can massage it out. Sometimes I feel soreness if I squeeze my butt muscles together. The only thing I can think of possibly happening as far as injury goes is I was in a car accident 3 years ago and my seatbelt didn’t lock and I flew across the center console hitting my bottom on that. It didn’t bother me right away though? Can tailbone pain be chronic where it comes and goes?

Brief Answer:
Since there is past trauma, it's better to do the X-rays.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Since there is past trauma, getting an X-ray is necessary.

Yes, tailbone pain may be chronic and may be exacerbated by certain positions when sitting.

Since it feels muscular, using local anti-inflammatory creams such as Diclofenac gel may help.

Hope this helps.
