How Long Does Immunity Last After Receiving Tetanus Injection?

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Apr 2017
Question: My wife has got a small cut in her finger yesterday from a iron wire and I wanted to take her for a tetanus injection. Wire was not rusted but I still thought of giving it just to be on safer side.

She took 2 dose of tetanus when she was pregenent almost a year ago. We have 10 month old kid now.

My question is on what should be the duration between tetanus injection?

Since she has taken it year back, is it still advised to take it now?

Brief Answer:
Explained below..

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query in HealthcareMagic,

I have gone through your query and can certainly understand your concern,

Since she had taken her dosage of tetanus during pregnancy, it is not considered worthwhile to get another booster shot, as the immunity from the previous doses are known to prevail for a couple of years.

There is not set barrier of duration between the tetanus injections, though theoretically it is said to get repetitive booster doses after every 5 years.

If at all exposed to a severe injury, regardless of the recent TT shots, it is always advised mandatory to repeat the dose in such conditions.

Personally, I would not suggest to get a repeat shot of vaccine, but if you feel insecure, you may as well get her vaccinated.

I hope I have answered to your query,
