Question: Hello. How long can you take controloc(pantoprazolum) 20mg? I took it for a few months and it felt great. I stopped for a few days and acid came back.

Brief Answer:
for GERD it has to be taken for ever...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

if you're taking it for GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) then you can't really stop it unless you correct GERD surgically (if feasible). Otherwise you're going to feel the acid in you esophagus and it may cause problems like esophagitis (common), Barrett's esophagus (less common) or even esophageal cancer (rare).

Having such symptoms is an indication for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to determine the exact cause.

If you're taking it for other reasons then please specify so I can give you relevant information or advice.

I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!

Brief Answer:
so it can't be stopped...

Detailed Answer:
You're welcome!

GERD is a lifelong problem. You can help yourself by adjusting to your doctor's advice regarding diet (avoiding to have full stomach, avoiding citrus fruits, cocoa, coffee, alcohol, etc and avoiding to lie down right after a meal). Pantoprazole or similar drugs have to be taken to avoid symptoms and complications.

Hi. I kinda found out it doesn't go away. I try to keep a diet. Pantoprazole is good when i take it. My doc said i can take it on long term just that i need to take 1 week break from time to time( i stopped for a few days, but this morning i had to take 1 pill) . I wanted to here a 2nd opinion about this issue. I will see her again in 2 weeks.

Brief Answer:
you can do that

Detailed Answer:
I see... you can do what your doctor advised although I usually advise my patients to take it every day. If you manage your diet you may reduce the symptoms so much that pantoprazole won't be necessary, but most patients need drug treatment.

Kind Regards!

Thank you so much for your time. One last questions. My doc said that when taking on a long term there is a chance the proton "something" will atrophy. Not sure if i got it correct.

Brief Answer:
there are some risks

Detailed Answer:
You're welcome!

There are some risks associated with chronic use but you've got to consider the benefits too. GERD invariably causes esophagitis and esophagitis leads to Barrett's esophagus. So receiving treatment is beneficial.

Proton pump inhibitors may indeed cause atrophy in long term use but serious problems are very rare and not well documented. There are some concerns about dementia too but also not adequately documented. The risk for gastrointestinal problems (e.g. gastroenteririts caused by Salmonella) is also higher with proton pump inhibitors. The list of potential side effects is quite long but there is no doubt (with current medical knowledge) that using them provides more benefits than risks.

Kind Regards!
