Question: I am having prostate lymph node biopsy done. How is this performed? Will I need recovery time?

Biopsy of the enlarged lymph nodes suspected to be due to malignancy of the prostate is done by two methods :

1) As a frozen section biopsy during surgery for removing prostate and histopathological examination of a removed lymph node is done while the patient is under anesthesia and depending upon the report the extent of surgery is decided on table . This is a standard protocol if the diagnosis of malignancy of the prostate is confirmed before surgery .

2) Second method is by Aspiration biopsy by needle which done though perineum under local anesthesia and under Ultrasound or MRI guidance. This is done as out patient procedure and patient recovers within a day or two only.
