Question: Reading online, research into the effectiveness of stents seems mixed. Is it a good procedure to have, or do the risks outweigh the benefits?

Brief Answer:
Stenting benifits are many as compared to risks!

Detailed Answer:
Hi
With advent of technologies the chances of stent failure is less then 1% .Benifits definitely outweightscthe risks. If medicines are properly followed post stenting then chances of stent failure are almost negligible.Life of a stent can be as high as 15-20 years.Dont go on online reports practically it improves the survival of patients and their longevity. If blockage is more then 75% one should definitely go for stenting unless contraindicated.
Thanks

One site where the questions were raised was this one: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/08/15/heart-stents-continue-to-be-overused/?_r=0. It is an article from the New York Times quoting articles in medical journals. One of the main concerns seems to be whether putting stents in the narrowest places actually addresses the problem, since the points of greatest weakness can be small, even invisible, lesions elsewhere. There also seems to be some evidence that the patient's longevity is not improved any more than by taking medication--though in my case medication seems to have been ineffective. Thanks for your advice.

Brief Answer:
Follow up answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again
If stenting is not possible then CABG(cardiac bypass is done).Whether a stent can be put or not depends totally on reports of angiogram. As already told patient with less then 75% blockage are managed medically,However stent should be used in more then 75% blockages.
Stents can only be deployed in main vessels when there is a visible lesion.Stents have no role in management of micro vascular angina. As in your case medicines are not working well a angiogram is going to decide whether stent can be deployed or not.
On google any person can feed any data, without any documented evidences. So i would suggest you not to google too much,If you want to read more opt for NCBI or JACC manuals.

Thanks you.
