Brief Answer:
Tramadol is also an opioid but synthetic (man made) and weaker one

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

In fact, Tramadol is also an opioid and it's side effects and other characters are that's of all opioids but with some differences as below.

1. its is synthetics opioid this means it is not naturally derived from morphine opioid rather synthesized scientifically. (this means this is less addictive)
2.it also has other effects then it's opioids effects that is increasing serotonin level these are used for depression, so it's effects are also like anti depressant.
3. its a weaker opioid means not as effective morphine.

when compared to hydrocodone, we again say that's it's weaker then hydrocodone such that's it's 100 mg equals to 5 mg of hydrocodone for pain relief. It's less addictive then that as well. It's pain relief is same as any with other opioids but is weaker one and is needed in more doses to achieve pain relief.

Opioids (and Tramadol) when taken with anti histamine, may increase the sedation (drowsiness) as antihistamines also causes some sedation so care should be taken and if feeling sleepy, best is to avoid driving and running machinery.

so to cut it shot, Tramadol effects are similar like other opioids (including side effects) but it's less addictive and weaker one then hydrocodone, but should be taken and considered as opioid.
And has got all potentials for substance misuse so it's always been a prescription only medicine (like all opioids) and is reserved for pain relief not responding to other methods.

The effect on brain include pain relief, mode elevation, sedation.

Hopes I have answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this. Please don't hesitate to ask anything in this regards.
Kind regards,
Dr. Rahman
