How Does Rocephin Help In Treating Tonsillitis?

Question: My 5 year old has severe tonsilitis again, 8th time, she is on Augmentin, day 4 with no improvement, will a Rocephin shot help? Is there risk of infection going into blood stream?

Tonsillitis is often associated with respiratory tract infections in children. Most often, gurgling with lukewarm water multiple times a day provides relief. Unless associated with fever, antibiotics are not always necessary and irrespective of use of antibiotics, the episodes last 5-7 days. So, I do not think that Rocephin shots are required. It is unlikely to provide any additional benefit. Just complete the course of Augmentin. It is a good antibiotic anyway. In case the infection enters blood stream, fever would be present. Unless fever is present, you need not worry about infection entering the blood stream.
