Brief Answer:
Multifocal lenses will provide correction for both distance and near.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic

I reviewed your history.
Multifocal lenses differ from other lenses by the fact that they correct for both distance and near vision.
The other group of lenses are called as monofocal lenses and they correct only for distance and the person needs to wear spectacles for near vision after they are implanted.
Whereas spectacles for near vision are not required after multifocal lenses.

Multifocal lenses will not cause any damage to retina. In diabetic patients there are chances of developing diabetic retinopathy and this requires treatment by laser. In diabetic patients silicone lenses need to be avoided.

Regarding your mother she can go for multifocal lenses if she has been implanted with same multifocal lens in the first operated eye. If she has undergone cataract surgery in one eye with monofocal lens it is better to go with monofocal lens for the other eye to prevent dissimilarity in lenses.

Hope this information is helpful to you.
