How Can An Infected Tooth Be Extracted When I Am Specifically Asked Not To Discontinue Taking Plavix And Aspirin Everyday?

Question: \I have RA and am on biologics, also I have 2 new stents (2 months) 2 other stents and an ICD. I am on plavix and aspirin. My heart dr told me not to stop taking them for any reason. I had teeth capped in Mexico six years ago due to missing teeth and bone loss. Now I have even more bone loss and am getting infection in several. All my remaining teeth are XXXXXXX except 2. I need to have all my teeth orally removed and implant dentures if possible. First can I get all my teeth removed by an oral surgeon at one time (maybe in the hospital) and Second is there anyway that medicare would pay for at least the extraction part due to my heart condition and my RA and high risk of infections? would this be too dangerous for my heart: However, I know it is also dangerous to have infections in your mouth.with a heart condition and RA. Please give me any suggestions and opinions, I dont know what to do and I know the cost of implant dentures is not really expensive. My dentist says that fixing each tooth as they become infected will be very expensive if it is even possible to save the tooth for a short time. Please help. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Extraction cannot be done without stopping blood thinning medicines

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

First thing that you should make a note is that you cannot opt for extraction of teeth when you are taking blood thinners as it can lead to severe bleeding that can become fatal.

So it is generally advised to the patient to take a consent from your Cardiologist/Physician for stopping blood thinners for about 5 days to a week and then only proceed for extraction.

So you should consult your Cardiologist once.

Also implant supported dentures needs cutting of gums and bone so it also needs a consent from your doctor.

Fixing each tooth can be expansive but if extraction cannot be done then it is the option left.

Also regarding Medicare, if it covers dental procedures then possibly extraction will be paid if at all you have a dental cover and not due to the existing heart condition or RA.

If you proceed for extraction after getting a consent from your Doctor better get it done by an Oral Surgeon only..

Hope this information helps..

Regards.
