Question: Hii, I am 54 years old and have as well as high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, pre-diabetic and elevated cholesterol and considered obese. my blood pressure is controlled with Losartan HCTZ, Bystolic and Norvasc daily. I take Synthyroid for my thyroid and no medication for the prediabetes. My A1C is usually around 6.1 and I'm supposed to be watching my diet and diet and exercising. I haven't been doing too great with that but still trying. Not taking anything for the cholesterol right now. Last blood test total cholesterol was 220. I'm considered obese because I'm 5'0 feet tall and weigh 160.
My concern is should I get the COVID 19 vaccine and if so, which one? And, with all my ailments what do I need to worry about as far as dying from the vaccine or any possible side effects considering my health? Or, is there any tests that I should have my doctor order first for me as a precaution before having the vaccine?

Thanks

I would strongly recommend getting a Covid 19 vaccine in your case.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I understand your concern and considering all your medical problems, I would strongly recommend getting the Covid 19 vaccine, as there are really high chances for complications if you get infected from Covid 19.

So, the chances that you get complications from the vaccine are really low compared to the chances of complications from Covid 19 infection.

The vaccine will certainly help protect you from the virus and from its complications too.

There is no test to perform before getting the vaccine. It is important to feel good (not with flue , fever or any other virus) before getting the shot.

Regarding the vaccine type, I would recommend Pfizer or Moderna, which are quite safe with a really low rate of complications.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

I would be glad to assist you again whenever you need!
