Hi There! I Was Diagnosticated With Prostatitis Last Year, Took

Question: Hi there!

I was diagnosticated with prostatitis last year, took my meds and I felt good. Didn't have sex since then.

Tonight, for the last two hours I felt this urge to urinate, I literally go to bathroom, finish and I have to urinate again. For the last two times, I saw blood there too. It hurts right after I finish.

It's 1.39 AM here. Is this an emergency or should I wait until tomorrow and call my doctor? Any meds I can take until tomorrow to be able to sleep?

Brief Answer:
This doesn't seem to be an emergency, you can wait till you call your doctor tomorrow- recommendations below

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

By what you explain, this does not seem like a medical emergency and you can wait till you call your doctor tomorrow. On the other hand, I understand this may be very uncomfortable.

To help with the pain, I would recommend you to take Ibuprofen 600-800 mg every 6 hours after food (to protect your stomach) and also try to drink plenty of water. Drinking water will help flush the urinary system in case there is a blockage (a stone that is trying to get out) or in case there is any infection.

Cranberry juice and vitamin C have been used as well to help with urinary burning and discomfort.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Thank you! I am not looking for something for the pain, because it lasts only for a minute after I urinate.

I just want something to stop this urge to go to the bathroom so I can sleep and stop freaking out from seeing the blood.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

I understand the need to stop the urge to urinate. Unfortunately, there is no other thing that will stop this urge till it is treated or the body fights the cause of it.

Drinking plenty of water may cause you to need to use the bathroom more often but may prevent the worsening of the pain and the urge.

Also, I would recommend you to use Ibuprofen as it does not help only with pain but with inflammation as well so it may make you feel better.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Now I have mild fever and chills. It seems the blood from the urine is not visible anymore. Should I go to the ER or I can wait?
I can go to my doctor in less than 4 hours.

Brief Answer:
There is no need to urgently go to the doctorr

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

The presence of chills and fever indicates infection. Urinary infections are not medical emergencies generally but the sooner you start treatment the earlier you will feel better.
So, it is not necessary to go to the doctor urgently but if you can see him soon, you may.

If I were you and it is still night there, I would just take the ibuprofen (this will help with the fever as well), and plenty of water and in the morning would call the doctor.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
