Question: Hi there! I tested positive for covid last sunday. I started having symptoms last friday/saturday! According to the new isolation rules my isolation is done today. I was going to see a friend of mine tomorrow if my symptoms are gone( they are almost gone) I am just wondering how contagious I am? I know they say that with this you are most contagious 2 days before/3 days after the onset of symptoms. I just dont know what to do

Brief Answer:
you are less contagious, almost nil

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

I have read your query, and understand your health concern.

I am sorry, you tested positive for covid. I am glad you are done with the isolation as of today. I am also glad that your symptoms are almost gone. At this stage, you are less contagious, almost nil. You may see your friend tomorrow.

However, please make sure you have not had fever for 24 hours, before meeting your friend. You must wear a mask everywhere — even at home around others — for at least five more days. If you were fever-free for last 24 hours, you are free to go and see your friend.

I appreciate your thought of being a socially responsible person.

Most important of all, please follow covid appropriate behavior (wearing mask, frequent sanitizing of hands, and maintaining social distance), wherever you are.

I hope you are vaccinated for covid.

Let me know if you have more queries.

Regards,
Dr Shanthi E

Hello dr.Shanthi,

Thank you for answering my question. Am I okay to see my friend without a mask? ( I am vaccinated and he is not) i try not to talk about vaccines with him because we have differing opinions.

I did do an at home otc test and it came back positive… I have another one that I was going to do tomorow. Is that right for me to do? If it comes back negative I’m going to assume I’m okay to see him without a mask… Also I was thinking about even putting off seeing him at least until Sunday( 8 days since symptoms) or even Tuesday(10 days).

I feel like I’ve been very paranoid about this…. But I just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing and I don’t want to be selfish… I miss my friend but I don’t want to transmit anything.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
no, you can't see your friend without a mask.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

No, you can't and you should not see your friend without a mask.

I am glad you are vaccinated.

Your home otc test came back positive. This means to say, the virus is still active inside your body. I suggest you to put off further otc testing by 2 to 3 days.

The details you gave in your follow up query, somehow does not make me comfortable. And, NO; it's not okay to see your friend tomorrow, and also without a mask. I hope you understand the situation. I am sorry but I am trying to help you.

The best approach here would be to put off seeing your friend until Tuesday (10 days).

You are not paranoid about this, XXXXXXX You are being responsible. I understand you miss your friend. Give it time until Tuesday. Please repeat the otc test on Monday night. If it turns out to be negative, then you are good to go and see your friend. However, please make sure to wear your mask always, when you are with your friend, and maintain social distance.

Please let me know if you have more concerns.

Take good care of yourself.

Regards,
Dr Shanthi E
