Hi There. I Have A Rather Complex Question.., I Fractured

Question: Hi there. I have a rather complex question.., I fractured my leg in 3 places several weeks ago. It’s been operated on and seems to be healing well tho it’s still quite swollen. My o575rtho prescribed a pain killer but it doesn’t agree with me and no longer need it, he also prescribed Cephalexin 4x a day... I have 4 days left but want to stop it as I attribute it to a nasty cough I’ve devloped, canker sores etc. I’ve also backed off Lamotrigine because I don’t want any complications. My main concern is that I was prescribed Eliquis a couple weeks ago 2.5 2x a day but a doctor who became aware of this was very concerned, making me question whether or not I should stay on it. Today my hand swelled up, stopped and then continued to do this throughout the day. Do you think I should continue on this? Taper off (if so how?) or stop all together? I am 57, high blood pressure but otherwise healthy. Should I finish out the antibiotic or is it ok that I stopped? And finally I’ve been sleeping horribly... roughly 3 hours since Thurs and so will seek Ambien tomorrow, Ok!? I appreciate any advice you can share with me..,feel rather lost.., moved recently so haven’t established reg for patient relationships tho my Ortho is lovely. Thx so much!

Brief Answer:
Continue antibiotics till recommend by doctor, and other details.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

Your situation is a bit complex and there are different topics to be evaluated.
First of all you should continue the rest of antibiotics, cephalexin, as prescribed by your doctor in order that the you don't get the wound infected. It should have been taken together with vitamin C. Also you should have been taking antinflamatory drugs such advil or naproxen for pain and swelling. When you are using advil or any other antinflamatory drugs you should not take eliquis because it increases the risk of bleeding and dangerous haematomas.
You may need more time for your hand to get healed and swelling to be down. It may need up to 6 weeks.
I believe also that you shouldn't have stopped lamotrigine abruptly.
Tapping off the dosage gradually is recommended.
Stopping it may have caused you to sleep horribly.
I think you should not seek for ambien but continue lamotrigine.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Brief Answer:
Stop eliquis immediately and don't take anymore while on NSAIDs.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
I think you should stop eliquis immediately and don't take any of it if you are on advil or other antinflamatory drugs.
Taking ambien while on lamotrigine may be dangerous.
I think the cough may be caused by cephalexin because it sometimes gives cough as a side effect and your lungs were clear. Also you are on antibiotics so no risk of respiratory tract infection.
I think you can use citerizine once at night before sleep and to help you with cough and sleep also.
Take it for 7 to 8 days.

Ok, thanks very much. So you suggest that I discontinue Eloquis. Is it ok to just stop taking it or should I take one a day for a couple of days and then discontinue?

I will re-up with Lamotrigine and my antibiotic WITH vitamin C.

If I do take Ambien it won't be dangerous, will it? It is the only thing, after YEARS of rampant insomnia, that really allows me to fall asleep and rest like a normal human being :(...

I have developed a weird cough...are any of these drugs attributable to that? It came out of nowhere but it feels very deep in my lungs. Several days ago I had a pretty thorough going over at the hospital and they assured me that my heart is strong, lungs clear, etc.

Thanks again for you sage advice, looking forward to another answer!!

STOP ELIQUIS. CEPHALEXINE IS PROBABLY CAUSING THE COUGH
