Question: Hi have just realised that last night by mistake as I am away I brushed my teeth with a small amount of voltarol gel. I have had a very strong menthol taste in my mouth since then and I realised that’s what it was as I saw it in my washbag with my toothpaste. Do you think this is toxic

This happened 12 hours ago I didn’t swallow any I spat it out like toothpaste. I am very worried about the menthol taste and dry nasal passages. It’s stopped me tasting anything and I wonder when this will wear off and is it very toxic to me? What can I do about this please?

Brief Answer:
Probably the Voltaren gel is not toxic, you should not be worried.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Voltaren gel is an anti-inflammatory medication.

The side effects of this gel are related to a chronic use.

A single use is very unlikely to cause toxicity or any damage to the teeth.

So, I suggest you not to be worried.

The lack of taste probably relates to the menthol taste and will go away on its own.

Meanwhile, I suggest you to rinse the mouth frequently with plenty of water.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

It’s now 14 hours and I still have the cool feeling in my throat and my nose feels like I have a cold. When will this go and what can I do? Should I seek medical help? I know you say it’s not toxic but it clearly shouldn’t be put in the mouth

Brief Answer:
No medical help is needed, the symptoms will go away on its own.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

I am sorry for my late response.

In my opinion medical care is not needed in this case.

I suggest to rinse the mouth frequently with water

You can also use chamomile tea to help in calming the gengive and taking out the menthol taste.

The symptoms will go away on its own in a few days.

Take care dear,
