Question: Hi There,

I am a 30-year-old Female, 127 pounds. Since July I have had bleeding in my stool on and off - but more on the frequent side after every bowel movement. I do have a history of constipation and have been told I have IBS. In the last month, I have noticed more bleeding in the stool along with an increased amount of white mucus on the stool mixed with red blood. When I use the bathroom, I do not have any pain in the rectum but notice the blood around the stool and when wiping. Could this be a sign of colon cancer?

Brief Answer:
Very likely Hemorrhoid.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for choosing "Ask a Doctor" to your query,
Have seen your details and I appreciate your concerns,
As you have a history of constipation very likely the blood in stool is because of Hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids are of two types-
1)Internal
2)External
Very likely your hemorrhoids are internal.
I would suggest you to start using a laxative Lactulose daily to keep your stools soft and go for a proctoscopic as well as digital rectal examination at your GP office.
Cancer at your age is very uncommon plus is accompanied by lots of symptoms like severe pain and uncontrolled bleeding.
So let's rule out common thing first.
Thank you.

Is it normal for an internal hemorrhoid to bleed for this long every time I pass stool? Also, why am I seeing an increase in white mucus on the stool.. is that due to constipation or the hemorrhoid? Thank you for your answer, I began taking a stool softener last night so I will monitor my symptoms in the next week and see if the bleeding goes away, if it does not I will be making an appointment with a dr for an exam.

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Constipation causes hard stools,
This hard stool when passes through the soft lining of ano rectal causes the veins to swell up and bleed.
These swollen up bleeding veins are called hemorrhoids.
So basically constipation is the root cause of Hemorrhoid.
You can also apply Preperation H once daily before sleep for 10 days.
If you feel the difference revert back.
Regards!
