Question: Hi
Sir

My wife 52 years age, is suffering from vertigo. I have consulted all experts like Neuro Physician, ENT, MD medicine, General Physician. MRI, X rays and other tests are normal. All Doctors finally have advised to take Physiotherapy for the problem. But as per General Physician advice, she is taking 2 times a day Sturgeon 25. The situation is under control. Physiotherapy is also going on. But when she does not take Sturgeon she feels vertigo. However the dose from thrice a day has been reduced to twice a day,

Please advise, it is safe to take Sturgeon 25 for long days as she has already taken it for more than 40 days.

Thanks and best regards

Brief Answer:
Long term use is not recommended.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Long term use of Stugeron ( cinnarizine ) is not recommended. It can cause side effects like tremors and rarely depressive symptoms. More over you might feel excessive drowsiness and fatigue which might impair your day to day activities. However these symptoms are not common on short tern use and you can continue the drugs up to one year safely.
You can switch to alternative like betahistine which is quite tolerated and side effects are minimal especially on long term use.
The symptoms are suggestive of inner ear related problems and an ENT specialist is will be a better choice for you.

Thanks sir for your kind advice.

Actually, this problem is lingering on since last year. We then visited ENT many times and finally he advised us to consult Ortho/ and Neuro Ph. We consulted ortho. He then told us its not due to Ortho related. Please consult Neuro Ph. We took her treatment for few months. He got done MRI of brain too but finally he advised for some exercises like gait training through Physiotherapist. MRI was normal.

This is the all background.

As advised by you should we stop Sturgeon 25 now and start betahistine tab (but of which power).?

Thanks...

Brief Answer:
You can start on 8 mg twice daily dose.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Then it could be a positional vertigo. It will respond well to exercises.
You can start on betahistine( vertin is a popular brand) 8mg twice a day dose after discussing with your treating physician. You can step up the dose to 16 mg,
Wishing all the best.
Thanks

Yes Sir, Thanks. You said rightly.

It is said to be positional vertigo. But Vertin has not been more effective. Sturgeon 25 did well.

I have read somewhere that Positional Vertigo goes automatically after some time?.

And as you advised finally we should carry on with Sturgeon 25 two times or SOS or for few months ( may be upto 1 year total) as advised by our General PH. Try betahistine 8mg instead after long time use of Surgeon 25.?

Pl advise.

Thanks

Given.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Exercises otherwise called Epley manoeuvre is very effective for positional vertigo.
If stugerone is working well, you can switch to it rather than changing the drug.
Wishing all the best.
