Hi, My Son Who Is 14 Yrs Old Has Iris

Question: Hi, My son who is 14 yrs old has iris coloboma in both his eyes. He got the laser treatment done when he was 1 yr old. Recently he was operated for retina detachment in one of his eyes. As per his doctor, retina is attached properly. But even after 8 weeks, he is saying the alphabets are still blurry and he is not able to read with that eye. Will the blurriness go away ? I am also worried about his other eye. How can we be careful to ensure he does not have further retina detachment. Thanks.

My dear,
Thanks for sending your query to us.
If the retina is properly attached and within 2months postoperative inflammation has settled one possibility is of change in refractory power of eye so he has to have checkup for glasses and also quantitative assessment of visual recovery.
The child is to have regular six monthly or yearly detailed retinal examination to rule out any changes which can cause detachment in the other eye as well.
He is to avoid sports with sudden jerky movement like badminton and high impact like vollyball and avoid excessive weight lifting.

Thanks for your reply. My son is not into any kind of sports as such. I had another question. He keeps grinding his teeth a lot in his sleep. Its been there for quite some years now. Dentist said its not harming his teeth and he needs to relax and meditate to get rid of it. Does teeth grinding put pressure on his eye nerves and cause retina detachment ? Thanks.

Teeth grinding does not lead to retinal detachment.

Please get his eyes checked from time to time and get glasses checked if visual improvement is not up to the mark.
