Question: Hi I received the study regarding my chest xray. I have had a cough for over two months. I don't smoke. It stated the heart and mediastinum are normal in size and contour. There is a course of linear opacity project in the left lung zone presumably external to the patient. The lungs and pleural spaces are otherwise clear. Change noted of the thoracic spine. Impression no acute intrathoracic process is identified. I just wanted to know what the external means. Is this anything to worry about. I haven't had a follow up yet with my Doctor. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Nothing to be worried about.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Thank You for the query.

External to the patient means that what has been seen is probably something that is not a part of Your body like something You were wearing during the x-ray or something You have had on the skin.
No matter what is this, for sure it is nothing to worry about as it has been discribed as discreet difference in density seen as something more white.

Hope this helps.
Regards
