Hi I Need Another Doctor’s Opinion. I Have A Question

Question: Hi I need another doctor’s opinion. I have a question for a dermatologist. Lately my face has been very hypersensitive to everything. It burns and it feels tight, mostly in my lower cheeks. I didn’t do anything different in my skincare, no over exfoliating, and no new skin products. Week of April 11, I started to feel my face getting a little more sensitive day after day. On April 20, I noticed it became extremely hypersensitive. Since then, I have only been washing my face with water because that’s the only thing it can tolerate. I have no rash, no visible signs of irritation. Just a very hypersensitive feeling, a tight feeling, and irritating feeling. I have been moisturizing with La Roche Posay Toleraine Ulta Cream made for hypersensitive skin. I was previously using their Foaming Toleraine Cleanser (with niancinimide) which maybe it was drying my skin out without me knowing. I have since stopped the cleanser.

I’m not sure what has caused this. Could it be indoor heat that caused further dryness with the Foaming cleanser? Could it be the face masks we have been made to wear because of Covid19? I’m not a healthcare worker so I don’t wear the mask often. Only when I go to grocery store. I do remember in early April, I sprayed perfume on my wrists. Later on in the day, I took a nap on the couch and my head was resting on my arms. Do you think the perfume rubbed off onto my face and ruined my face? I’m so nervous Doctor.

One time a dermatologist told me our skin can go haywire at anytime for no apparent reason.

Do you think I could actually ruined my skin barrier with perfume on my wrists? I’m so nervous. Or skin become hypersensitive from a Foaming cleanser? Indoor heat? Stress? (which my boyfriend thinks it’s from)

How long does it take for skin barrier or acid mantle to improve?

Also, if perfume (Clinique Happy) did rub onto my face from my wrists, can perfume go deep into the skin like the dermis? Or is it just on the surface?

I will say the burning has somewhat lessened. But I still can only use water right now to wash face. The tightness feeling is still there.

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Regarding sensitive skin

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

How often do you wash your face?
Repeatedly washing your face or splashing water to calm the sensitive feeling can in turn lead to mord dryness and feeling of tightness.
There could also be some ingredient in the moisturizer that you are using currently or perhaps the foaming cleanser you used earlier that could be causing this feeling of burning and tightness..You may avoid using anything on your face for a few weeks to let the skin heal. Sensitive skin syndrome is a not too well defined and it can take a few weeks for the skin to get back to that normal feeling. The basic idea is to stop using anything and everything on face (even moisturizers, sunscreens etc) that could potentially be causing the skin to become sensitive.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance

Ok thank you Doctor! Regarding to perfume making contact with the face, does it go down deep into the skin and damage it? Or does it stay on the surface or superficial?

I’m so nervous perfume damaged my face.

Also, can the skin be dry/dehydrated without any visible dryness? I have no flakiness. Is the tightness feeling a XXXXXXX of dehydration?

Brief Answer:
Regarding skin sensitivity and burning

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Perfumes or any other cosmetics can cause skin burning and sensitivity. Feeling of skin tightness is more of a result of skin damage rather than dryness worsened by repeated washing leading to dryness/ lack of essential moisture in the skin.
Take care.
