Question: Hi,
I have experienced a gum inflammation which started as being quite minor a week ago. It has developed into greater inflammation overnight and after flossing it seemed to worsen or become more inflamed in parts.

Should I take antibiotics at this stage while waiting for a dental appointment? I have keflex and ciprofloxacin on hand.

I have attached pictures of the infection.

Thankyou,
Regards.

Hi,

Also could I please ask what the infection appears to be? Is it gingivitis or just normal inflammation of the gums? Is a full exam required?

Thankyou.

Brief Answer:
Looks like gingivitis or thermal trauma

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing in.

I would like to ask you few questions:
- Is it generalized or localised to that area
- Do you have any other systemic disease?

If its generalised, then it can be gingivitis and can be cured by scaling but if its localised to that area then it can be due to physical or thermal trauma and will heal within a week time. Still I would advice you to get a full check up done.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks
Kind Regards

Thanks Dr. Sura,

The inflammation is localised to the area and started after eating a few hard apples.

I do not have any major conditions apart from those listed. Possibly my blood sugar levels are borderline and about 5.5.

Could the inflammation possibly be caused by trauma from biting together with existing plaque buildup generally?

Brief Answer:
Due to vigorous flossing and gingivitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for getting back to me.

It can definitely not be due to eating hard apples. As you have mentioned previously that you were flossing and it got worst, so might be due to vigorous flossing. Moreover, people with high sugar levels are more prone to gingivitis. It seems to be a combination of all of them.
The best way is to get xray done of that side to rule out is there any decay. If not, then get a deep clean done and take some multivitamins that might help.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks
Kind Regards
