Hi, I Had A Question For An Opthalmologist Re Myopia

Question: Hi, I had a question for an opthalmologist re myopia in my 13 year old son. He has been wearing glasses since the age of 9. he started at around -2.00 and is now at -4.50 . His maternal grandfather, with whom he shares some tendencies had very high myopia. I want to know how best to arrest the increase in his myopia. He likes reading kindle, which I have now curtailed to 30 minutes a day. Also someone said that reading kindle is better than watching LED TV at a distance of 10 feet.. is this true? I can install the kindle app on a large screen TV so that he can read at a distance, since some reports say near work is a major cause for myopia. will that be better for protecting his eyes..? I can install apps like Byju etc on the large screen TV if that is a better option than reading notes/textbook. I'd much rather that he saves his eyesight than get good grades. I am open to atropine drops if it actually helps in such cases. He is spending more time outdoors in sunlight now as compared to younger days.

thanks

Brief Answer:
Myopia does increase with age

Detailed Answer:
Hey thanks for the question. In myopia the eye ball is long is size and with time the length of the eye ball is increasing as every organ grows as we age so myopia does increase a little bit . You may try myatro drops which has low concentration of atropine at night time for few months as it is shown to slow the risk of myopia. Distant viewing and playing outside will help but only a little bit as we all need to study dear . Most important is getting a retina check up every 6 months as myopia has a high incidence of causing degeneration and holes in retina which can lead to retinal detachment which will need surgery and vision doesn’t recover 100% once you have had detachment . So if a retina specialist picks up the holes and degeneration on examination he / she may seal them with laser decreasing the chances of detachment . Hope my answer helps you. Regards
