Brief Answer:
Probably calcification cyst, follow the advice below

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The symptoms are probably related to a cyst in the breast.

The cysts in the breast are very common in our daily practice.

The calcification are tiny flecks of calcium like grains of salt — in the cyst of the breast.

Calcification usually can't be felt, but they appear on a mammogram.

They are usually benign and are not a matter of concern.

I would only recommend a follow up mammogram after six months for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

is a calcification cyst cancer? or could it turn to cancer the report read oval shaped , flattened 3mm complicated cyst follow up in 6 months for a left breast mammo poss us again. Is the puncate microcalcifications cancer or bad ones I read sometimes and of course I don't under stand what is good and not good. The radiologist came in and did the US after the tech did it and said small cyst with some junk in it and I don't see anything alarming to just follow up. Why am I having another mammo for cancer, size ect please tell me your thoughts. Is this something to worry about. Also said the cyst was 5 mm from the nipple

Brief Answer:
Calcification cyst is very rarely related to cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

I am sorry for my late response.

Calcification cyst is very rarely related to cancer.

They are usually related to a benign condition and are not a matter of concern.

The are very common, especially after menopause.

We often recommend to do a follow up mammogram to check if the size of the cyst has changed.

Anther examination that can confirm the benign nature of the cyst is biopsy.

So, I suggest you to consult your doctor about this examination.

Hope my answer was helpful.

Feel free to consult me again for further clarifications.

Take care dear,

also when going back in 6 month what change are they looking for the microcalcification change size of cyst ect. I read about puncate microcalcifications and it seems very contradictory saying that they are round or oval and are begine then it said some puncate microcalcifications can be very early start of DCIS WOULD YOU BE SO KIND TO HELP ME UNDERSTND THIS MORE CLEARLY.

Brief Answer:
The accurate diagnosis is confirmed only by the biopsy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

The radiologist may check for changes in the size of the cyst.

Other changes that can be done are the shape, and margins (edges) of the cyst.

Based on evidence studies DCIS can produce calcification.

The accurate diagnosis is confirmed only by the biopsy.

Usually findings that haven’t changed from older mammograms aren’t likely to be DCIS.

Hope I answered your question.

Kind regards,

Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi
