Hi Doctor, My Father Is Having Pain In Left Hand,

Question: Hi Doctor,

My father is having pain in left hand, left side of neck and in middle of the shoulders for past approx. 10 days. Whenever he sits for 5-10 min, the pain increases and he feels that the nerves are stretched and then he has to lie down to relax. The pain is not there when he is sleeping or lying on bed but, he feels pain if he is sitting. Also, he is not able to lift up the left hand fully. He is able to lift it up to some height but, not straight up. Even if he holds his left hand with right hand and raise it fully and leaves it then, the left hand is not able to hold itself in same position and it falls down.

Please see the prescription, medicines and report attached from the doctor whom he visited yesterday. Please see and suggest the cause and remedy for this issue. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Further investigations are needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your father's symptoms and reports of nerve conduction studies. As per the report, the doctor has diagnosed brachial plexopathy, where the nerve bundle that supplies to arm/hand is affected. The reason for that is not identified. Further investigations may help- these include MRI of left brachial plexus/cervical spine and blood tests such as ANA profile. After these reports, medical treatment can be decided.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.

Few queries from my side:

1. Understood that further tests are needed. But, it is a serious situation or this is a general/not critical thing which happens in old age? I am asking this because if it is some serious thing then we will do the tests immediately somehow else I am planning to meet my parents after 2 weeks and then I can help him in getting these tests done. Please suggest.

2. Doctor did some tests and had given the medicines based on that test yesterday. May you please suggest what are the medicines given for and shall he continue these medicines for one week as suggested?

Brief Answer:
It is not critical.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

2. It is not a critical condition and one can wait for tests. In some patients, the condition deteriorates. In that case, tests may have to be done earlier.

2. Medicines prescribed by the doctor are mostly vitamins and they help in strengthening the nerves. They can be safely continued.

Best wishes,

Hi Doctor,
These medicines are prescribed for 7 days and no additional tests have been suggested by the doctor to whom my father visited.

- Do you think these medicines will/can make any difference in 7 days if they are mostly vitamins?

- Also, would you like to suggest any additional medicines which may help in this condition?

Brief Answer:
Some recovery may be noted.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

If the underlying cause is not serious, some improvement may be noted with these vitamins.

As of now, no additional medicines are needed. If there is no improvement with the current medicines, additional investigations (as suggested above) should be done. After that, more medicines may be advised.
