Question: Hi Doctor,
My daughter is 2 years 5 months old.
She was having runny nose yesterday. She had vomited today morning and then again sometime back. So, she had vomited twice today. What shall we do?

Just to give you a background....yesterday she went to play outside during the day first in a covered play area having air conditioning and then outside in a park when it was hot. Though, it was not in direct sunlight but, it was hot. Can this temperature difference be a cause of vomiting? We have Emset available with us at home. Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Most likely heat exhaustion. Viral infection is another possibilty

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for asking on Ask A Doctor platform

I have gone through the query and do understand your concern.
In view of history of exposure to high environmental temperature and symptoms it seems to be heat exhaustion. Other possibility is some viral infection.
Management is same for both the condition.
Give plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Do sponging with normal (not cold) water. It helps in decreasing the temperature.
Give Emeset for vomiting.
Monitor temperature and observe for signs of dehydration like urine output, general activity and shunken eyes.
If fever is not decreasing, vomiting is persistent even after giving medications or if you are noticing any other abnormal symptoms please consult your pediatrician.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.

Noted that we have to give plenty of fluids.
What else shall we give or avoid in particular in this condition?
Shall we give milk and dairy products like curd etc or these have to be avoided?
Can we give fruits like banana, apple etc?

Any other precautions which needs to be taken? Please suggest. Thanks.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks again for your reply.

She has not vomited in last 12 hours but, she was mostly on liquids during this time. We will continue keep a check.
Few more queries:

1. We had given Emeset 5 ml one time yesterday as per the doctor suggestion last time she had vomiting. What is the correct dosage of Emeset? If required, can it be given twice in a day 5ml each? or 5ml once a day is maximum which can be given?

2. She is touching her tummy in the morning and seems to have some pain though she is not able to tell properly. She is just touching it again and again. What shall we do for this?

Please suggest.

Regards,
Ankur

Hi Doctor,
She seems to have loose motions now. Though she has not vomited today. Can we give Enterogermina for loose motions, 5ml?

Is there any change in treatment which we shall do?

Brief Answer:
Give Enterogermina, zinc and plenty of fluids

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for follow up

As since last 12 hours there is no episode of vomiting there is no need to give Emeset regularly.
You can give Emeset if there is any further vomiting.
Give Enterogermina for 5 days (one minibottle once a day) which is a probiotic and helps in early recovery. Give zinc syrup 20 mg(5 ml) once a day for 15 days. Give plenty of fluids, paracetamol for fever and observe for signs of dehydration.
Antibiotic is not needed as in most cases it is due to some viral infection.
I hope with these measure she will recover.

Regards
