Hey Doctor, I Have A HIDA Scan Scheduled For Tomorrow

Question: Hey doctor,

I have a HIDA scan scheduled for tomorrow and they’ve asked me to eat something fatty 6 hours before the test and then fast I’m just a little confused as to how much to eat would a McDonald’s cheeseburger with small fries be good enough or just one or the other would eating too much be bad for the scan? On an unrelated note as well just out of curiosity I had to clean up a urine spill at work, I was just wondering if you can catch anything from urine I tried my best to not touch it at all?

To add to the questions how much radiation are tlj exposed to during the test and what is the best way to flush it out of my system afterwards? Is it bad having a scan like this done at my age?

Brief Answer:
You can consume french fries or the burger as a regular or medium serving

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

The HIDA scan will show how your system breaks down fats. You can consume french fries or the burger as a regular or medium serving. Eating both can be a bit much of fat for the purpose of the test.

Cleaning a urine spill will not cause any hazard as long you used basic precaustions and washed any area that might have come in contact with the urine, like your hands.
